On-campus Employment (J-1 Students)

Read this First!

J-1 students always need to request written permission from OIPS before they begin work.  Working illegally is a non-reinstatable offense.  This means that you will have to leave the US and apply for a new re-entry visa.

We highly encourage you to watch the two videos before you start your job search.

Application Process

If you would like to request permission to work on campus, you need to complete the following steps:

Here is what you need to do before you begin your work:

If you do not have a Social Security Number (SSN):

  1. Review part A of the New International Employee guide
  2. Review the MasonOnBoard email sent by your employer (see New International Employee guide, step #2)
  3. Complete the On-campus Employment Certification (OCEC) form
  4. Request an Enrollment Certification
  5. Apply for a SSN
  6. Complete the form I-9 (included in the MasonOnBoard email)
  7. Visit the International Tax Office

If you already have a Social Security Number (SSN):

  1. Review part B of the New International Employee Guide
  2. Review the MasonOnBoard email sent by your employer (see New International Employee guide, step #2)
  3. Complete the form I-9 (included in the MasonOnBoard email)
  4. Visit the International Tax Office

IMPORTANT: You need a job offer to apply for Social Security Number (SSN).
