International Buddy Program

The International Buddy Program (IBP) aims to build cross-cultural relationships between George Mason’s students from different cultures and countries as they enjoy OIPS-facilitated events and activities. Whether you are international or domestic, IBP can be a great way to connect, share experiences, and participate together. To see what the program looks like in action, you can view photos from our Fall 2025 events here: https://gmuoips.smugmug.com/Fall-2025.

This program is built on a foundation of conversation, cultural exchange, and friendship. We hope you can join us!

Why Participate?

  • Build meaningful connections and networks among students outside the classroom,
  • Discover cultures beyond your own while sharing your own culture with others.
  • Explore new opportunities and activities outside your usual routine.

For Domestic Students

  • To help international students feel more comfortable and familiar with the George Mason campus and American culture, while introducing them to new activities and sharing experiences based on mutual interests.

For International Students

  • To help domestic and fellow international students learn about the diverse cultures and perspectives represented among our international student population, connect with domestic peers, and explore new activities or share experiences based on mutual interests.

What do IBP Participants Do?

  • Attend three International Buddy Program-specific events during the semester, including the kickoff and two follow-up events.
  • Stay engaged with your buddy group and other IBP participants between events in ways that work for you such as informal meetups, online chats, or going to other campus activities together.
  • Complete brief check in surveys so we can learn about your experience and continue improving the program

Important Notes:

  • We will send brief surveys to check in on your experience in the International Buddy Program and to address any issues. It is important that you respond promptly.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or in INTO Mason’s Academic English/Pathways program at George Mason University.
  • We encourage that you attend as many of the three IBP events as possible, 2 hours each, as part of this program. Additional interactions beyond the events are encouraged but not required.
  • The International Buddy Program is not an English tutoring program.
  • The program does not allow recruiting, soliciting, religious conversion, or any other exploitation of participants. Anyone reported engaging in these activities will be immediately removed from the program.
  • While we cannot accommodate specific requests for buddy connections, we do our best to match students based on their interests. Please note that connections may not be immediate and depend on the number and type of applications received. So, please share your interests in the survey!
