Step by Step Checklist:

There are 8 key steps you need to take from now until your first class.  It is important that you carefully review each step so that you do not miss any important deadlines or requirements.  To get started, click on the down arrow in front of each step.

Step 1: Submit Housing Application by Using Housing Online Portal

Submit your housing application on https://gmu.starrezhousing.com/StarRezPortal/81A962A1/1/1/Home-Welcome_to_the_Georg

If you have any questions about your housing application, you can directly email housing@gmu.edu

Step 2: Take the English Proficiency Test

Submit your English placement test (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo) results by July 15. Make sure you take the test early enough to have the scores officially recorded and sent to George Mason by the deadline.

(Please note that it is the date that Mason needs to receive their English proficiency score, therefore we recommend submitting your scores by early July).

Step 3: Download the Canvas Student App

Download the Canvas Student App for iOS and Android.

This Canvas course is designed to help you become familiar with the learning management system, Canvas, used for online and hybrid courses.

Step 4: Submit your Mason ID Photo

Step 5: Submit your Immunization Documents

Have your health provider in China complete the Immunization Form and upload the form to the online portal: https://gmu.medicatconnect.com  by Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

To learn about immunization requirements and translation resources, go to the Student Health Services website or send an email to immunize@gmu.edu.

Step 6: Attend Orientation

All new undergraduate students in J-1 status are required to attend the on-campus orientation on  Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The location is at the Fairfax campus. Sessions include Immigration Compliance, the Honor Code, and Campus Resources.

Welcome to Mason and we are very excited for you to be joining our dynamic international student community!

Questions? Email OIPS at oipsprog@gmu.edu or (china121@gmu.edu)

Step 7: Complete International Student Check-In

All new international students are required to check-in with the Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS). This is the key step to let Mason know you have arrived. Not doing so could cause problems with a variety of administrative requirements. Have your DS-2019, Passport, and Visa ready to complete the International Student Check-In. More information about the check-in can be found at: https://oips.gmu.edu/international-student-check-in-form-for-j-1-students/

Step 8: Pay Fees

Pay health insurance, housing charges, and meal plan (if you were assigned housing without a kitchen) by Tuesday, January 21, 2025. GMU’s Cashier’s Office is located in SUB I, room 1501.

George Mason has partnered with Flywire to streamline the tuition payment process for our international students. Flywire allows students to pay from any country and any bank. They also offer excellent foreign exchange rates, allowing you to pay in your home currency (in most cases) and save a significant amount of money, compared to traditional banks. You will be able to track the progress of your payment throughout the transfer process via a student dashboard and you will also be notified via email when your payment is received by Mason. If you need to make an international payment, please visit Flywire. For more information on payment installment plans visit: https://studentaccounts.gmu.edu/
